Description
Before describing our premium Sambar powder, here is a quick peep into history of sambar, the mainstay of South Indian cuisine. It first originated in the mid-1700s. As the story goes, sambar was first made accidentally for Sambhaji, the Maratha ruler of Tanjore. He was also Chhatrapati Shivaji‘s step brother and Ekoji Bhosle’s brother. It was basically a modified version of Marathi ‘Amti’. Amti was made with moong dal and kokum. However, in the Tanjavur region, these items not being easily available, the chef replaced with them with tuvar dal and tamarind. Thus was born Sambar, named after Sambhaji, the king, for who it was prepared.
